So I've completed mymanuscript... It's time to write a query letter... yes, time to panic!
Okay, not really... but really.
Now what? Who has the right idea behind a query letter? What will the publisher in question think of my letter? Is it in the format they want?
All these question and many MANY more keep running at lightning speed past my mind.
How do you start? What do you say? How much is too much? How much is too little?
So, many questions.
And the Internet isn't much help. Try googling Query Letter Samples and you get 400,000 different results all saying the publisher wants something completely different then the other 399,999 say they want. If you look through all 400K samples, your novel might never get published.
Who is right? Which do you go with?
I have seen the Query Letters that have been accepted. But honestly they are vastly different per letter. Even from the same publisher acceptance pile!
You need to set yourself apart... says all the "notes". How exactly do you do that when there is nothing new under the sun?
I have thought about writing a FAKE query letter to start with, one that screams RUN AWAY! RUN AWAY! Just to break the proverbial ice. But I can't even do that at this point.
I started my query... then deleted it. Started it again... deleted that too.
What is my problem? Why can't I write it and put myself out there? Is it because I don't find myself worthy of the time or effort that may be spent on someone reading the letter or the MS? Or is it the fear of failure?
Yah, probably some of both.
SO, I am putting this out there for the three of you who read my blog (LOL).
I, Eisley Jacobs, will write a query letter THIS WEEK and post it on this blog. I do solemnly swear. Then I might throw up, but I do promise to do it this week. THIS WEEK.
This week. This week.
Keep chanting, I am going to need it. *sigh*

Maybe (?) give yourself permission to write it and NOT post it on the blog.
ReplyDeleteMight (?) make it easier to do. Would for me, anyway.
